Real chao tian jiao as described by Fuchsia Dunlop in her seminal Sichuan cookbook "Land of Plenty" is hard to come by. Baiweizhai Sichuan Facing Heaven Chili Peppers are plump, red, fruity, and delicious, with a respectable amount of heat, and are fresher and spicier than Shuyi brand. This is the best source in the USA.
The seeds are viable. To germinate, soak the seeds in water for 24 hours, then sandwich them between wet paper towels in a sealed plastic bag and put them under a fluorescent light for a week. Transplant them to small pots with good potting soil after they sprout.
