Mooncake (simplified Chinese: 月饼; pinyin: yuè bĭng) is a Chinese bakery product traditionally eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival / Zhongqiu Festival on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month ( it is September 30, 2012). As one of the four most important Chinese festivals, the Mid-Autumn Festival is for lunar worship, symbolizing friendship and family reunion. As an indispensable delicacy on this celebrating occasion, mooncakes are shared between friends or in a family. Typical mooncakes are round or rectangular pastries, measuring about 4 inches in diameter and 2 inch thick and stuffed with thick fillings such as lotus seed paste, red bean, mixed nuts, jujube paste, etc., surrounded by a relatively thin (2–3 mm) crust. Some contain yolks from salted duck eggs. Today, it is customary for businessmen and families to present mooncakes to their clients or relatives as gifts.
